WALSH ISLAND DISPUTE

BIG CONTRACTS HELD UP STRIKERS DETERMINED. SYDNEY, February 16. Mr Buttenshaw, the Acting-Pre-mier, states that as a result of the trouble at Walsh Island contracts for £1,500,000 are held up. Should the works be closed down over 2,000 men will be idle. Referring to the question of closing, he said that the majority of the Cabinet are absolutely opposed to State industrial undertakings, especially those which are not paying, but they _ are trying to keep Walsh Island going, because it represents a new industry, and is of considerable importance to the port of Newcastle. The men declare their determination not to return to work until the bonus system is removed, because it is against the union rules.
