At Wellington Albert Durant, boarding house keeper, for receiving stolen goods, was sentenced to six months, to bo followed by two years’ probation.— Press Association.
The Dunedin Civic Choir, under the baton of Mr Paget Gale, held its first practice last evening for the 1928 season. There was a large attendance of members, and, judging by the enthusiasm shown, a very successful season is assured. The work under review is Wagner’s ‘ Tannhauser,’ which to a music-loving public needs no recommendation. More male voices in the choir will be welcomed.
The postal authorities advise that the Waikouaiti. which’left Sydney on Tuesday night for Bluff, has on board seventy-one bags and thirteen hampers of mail for Dunedin.
Severe damage resulted from an outbienk of fire this morning in a small wooden shop at the corner of I’jtt street and Heriot row. The City hire Brigade was called to the scene at R2U, but before the fire could be suppressed the building was badly burned, and a glasshouse nest door" was damaged. Miss Scott was the occupier of the shop, while Mr W. A. Scott was the owner or the glasshouse. The cause of the fire is unknown, and no insurances ?re yet available.
His Honor Mr Justice Sim reserved his decision in the case of Ernest 0. Nees (trading as the Commercial Investment and Discount Company, of Dunedin) v. Charles Botting, a claim for £550, principal and interest due on a promissory note, heard yesterday in the Supreme Court. Detectives Roycroft and Farcjuliarson this afternoon arrested a man and his wife on a charge of theft of house linen and Doulton ware to the value of £lO. They will be brought before the court to-morrow morning.
The Hospital Committee of the Hospital Board will recommend at the monthly meeting that the Victor combination air and water-cooled equipment installed on loan by Messrs Watson and Son, Ltd., for ultra-violet ray treatment at the hospital he now purchased as quoted by Messrs Watson and Son, Ltd., the same to be provided for in next year’s estimates. In the meantini the Dunedin Savings Bank has been written to regarding donation towards such purchase, and inviting the trustees to inspect the present installation.
That the sum of £BO be granted as a bursary to a nurse taking the postgraduate course for training of tutor nurses at the Wellington Hospital,, .same to he on the definite understanding that the nurse to whom the bursary has been given will return to the employ of the board for a definite stated period (say two years), or refund her bursary proportionately to the amount of service she is short of the contracted period, is a recommendation to be made by the Hospital Committee at the next* meeting of the Hospital Board. The committee will also recommend that the salaries of the second year house surgeons be increased to the rate of £2OO per annum as from April 1 next. The chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr W. E. S. Knight), Messrs Dove and _ Quelch, Sir L. E. Barnett, the medical superintendent, and secretary have been authorised to wait upon the Director-General of Health upon his next visit to Dunedin in reference to suggested extra purchase of radium and installation of radium emanation plant at the hospital. The Tramways Band went off for Christchurch this morning in two of the corporation motor buses. It is to compete in the B grade. The Mosgiel Band (Mr James White conductor) is entered in the C grade, and went up by the 11.34 express. By the same train the Southland Pipe Band also travelled. Pipe-major R. Sutherland is in charge musically, and Mr F. J. Logan the manager. The St. Hilda Band is booked for the 8.40 train to-morrow, and the Ivaikorai Band for the same train on Saturday. There was a clean sheet at the Police Court this morning.
