THE ISLAND DEPENDENCIES
Tr.ViiviHG CiVIL SERVANTS PROFESSOR MACMILLAN BROWN'S ADVICE [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH. February 15. The establishment or a school in one of the university colleges for the training of Civil servants before taking up duty in the Island dependencies of New Zealand was urged by Professor MacMillian Brown (Chancellor) at the meeting of the University Councl. He said that the school should teach not only the Polynesian languages, but much of the lore of the islands, and give acquaintance with the peculiar customs and traditions of each group. ‘‘With such a system we could "always distinguish between want of knowledge and error of judgment in leading to some difficulty or crisis,” said the Chancellor. “No New Zealand Ministry will ever be sure of their ground in the insular dependencies they have to administer till some such scheme has been formulated and put into working order.”
