MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the University Council, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P. (Chancellor), Mr W. J. Morrell (Vicechancellor), Sir James Allen, Professor Jnglis, Dr J. Fitzgerald, Dr W. Marshall Macdonald. Messrs J. W. Scurr, J. S. Douglas, J. Rennie, J. C. Stephens, .1. A. Moore, J. “Wallace, and L. D. Ritchie. CORRESPONDENCE.
The Otago Hospital Board wrote slating that it was prepared to enroll Miss Roussel!, a blind student, in the massage course provided she be admitted to the Medical School.—lt was agreed to accept Miss Ronsscll as a student. The Secretary of 'the Otago Hospital Board wrote asking for a report on the proposal that the elcctro-cardiograph he put in sole charge of Mr H. C. Manson, who should he remunerated at £25 per annum.—Referred to the Finance and Medical Committees for a report. Professor Lawson wrote asking if the council would repair his house.—Finance and Works Committefes to act.
The Acting Dean, Medical Faculty, wrote stating that the Advisory Committee recommended tho award of the Lady King scholarship to Dr Helen Easterfield.—Agreed to. Mrs B. Conly, formerly Miss Clement, wrote resigning as from February 29. Professor Ramsay recommended the appointment of an assistant at a salary of £32s.—Finance Committee to act. The Director-General of Health wrote recommending that Dr Cook bo appointed to continue research in regard to rheumatoid arthritis.—Tho Chancellor stated that there was sufficient money in hand to enable the research work to he continued till the end of July.—The appointment till tho end of July was agreed to. Dr D’Ath wrote recommending tho appointment of J. M'Cutcheon and W. J. Abbott as laboratory hoys in the bacteriology department, and P, G. Gale as laboratory boy in the pathology department. He further recommended that J. H. Fraser be laboratory boy in pathology in place of R. Dalcom, who had resigned. An additional recommendation was that the wages of Butler, laboratory boy, bo increased to £l. Agreed to. REPORTS. The Finance Committee reported, amongst other matters, having considered a letter from Dr Hercus requesting that the salary of his assistant he increased to £375 and the position offered to Dr Cook It was resolved that tho request bo declined, and that the position be advertised at £250 unless Ur Cook is prepared to remain at that salary. Tho committee considered appointments to be made in the economics department. Dr Fisher recommended that Mr IV. J. Boraman be appointed lecturer in household and social economics at £l2O, and that Mr L. Ross be appointed lecturer in economic history at £BO, and that £SO be deducted from his salary as W.E.A. lecturer. It was resolved to agree to both of these requests. The committee considered the report of the Home Science Committee, and resolved that Dr Gloy receive an annual increase of £SO from February I, 1928, while Miss Pope is on leave of absence. The committee considered a request from Dr Benbam that Miss Fyfe be raised to the status of lecturer, and decided that it was desirable that Miss Fyfe’s status remain that of assistant. The committee considered a letter from Professor Park, dated December 19. asking for leave of absence to allow of Ins visiting England in 1928. It was resolved to recommend the council to grant Professor Park leave of absence subject to satisfactory arrangements being made for tic. carrying on of his work during his absence, full details of such arrangements to ho submitted to the council for approval in January. The Finance and Medical Committees reported having jointly resolved on the recommendation of Dr Cowhand to recommend the council to appoint Dr Barrett for one year at £250 junior demonstrator in anatomy. The Works Committee reported haring considered a letter from_ Mr Anscombe stating that, during his absence he bad arranged for Messrs Miller and. White to attend to his business, and asked permission to introduce them to the meeting. Messrs Miller and WTiite were accordingly introduced. The committee considered a report from tho chairman, who stated that, sftjer- conferring with the architect, he had confirmed the selection of the triangular piece of land on the south-west side of the Leith as the site of the practice house. It was resolved that the action of the chairman be confirmed. _ It was further resolved that the registrar be asked to report to the next meeting as to the terms upon which the tennis courts are leased by the Students’ Association. It was resolved that Mr Anscombe be authorised to have increased water service installed at the Home Science School; that he he authorised to sell the balance of the Maori House; and that, in conjunction with the chairman, lie be authorised to act in having the chimneys at the Medical School repaired.
