Dunedin Cup Meeting
Second Day
Queen Balboa Wins J. C. Handicap
Had a number of the trainers with horses engaged at the meeting been able to anticipate before the acceptances closed on Friday the heavy rain and the affect it would have on the course on Saturday they would have paid up for several horses that found the going too hard,on Thursday, and those few extra horses would have made a great difference to both the racing and betting. The fields were not as good as on the opening day, and each day they were much smaller than they should have been for the stakes offered and the number of horses in training in and around Wingatui. The course was greatly improved by the heavy rain, and though it may have been a little dead when the programme opened it improved as the afternoon progressed, and was quite good halfway through the card. The racing was not as interesting as on the opening day, and it was a great pity that there was no horse available to extend Limerick, who, though only half ready, won, the Hazlett Memorial Plate very easily from Countersign, who won this race last year. Mr M'lvor’s starting was good throughout the meeting, though compared with the northern starters he is slow in getting the horses into the barrier, and occasionally misses chances of getting his fields away directly they line into the barrier through not having the release in his hand. 'When ho stoops to nick it up after having lined up his field they immediately get on their toes, and frequent delays are thus caused. The meeting was well managed by Mr Harry James, who filled Mr Hill’s place, and his well-trained staff, and from a racing point of view was quite a success; but with a drop of £7,720i on the totalisator turnover and a decrease in gate receipts it will not bo a profitable fixture for the executive. The totalisator turnovers at this meeting for the past three seasons are;—
far turn and halfway up the hill. At the second last fence these three were together a dozen lengths in front of Coastguard. Beauty Light led Jack o’ Lantern into the straight, and jumping the last hurdle safely won easily by six lengths from the favorite, with Red Heather eight lengths off third. Coastguard was a long way back fourth. Relic fell at the last fence, but his rider, C. Rush, got off with a slight shaking. Investments, £1,784*. * * * * In the Warrington Handicap King Balboa was made a good favorite, with Luminant and Rotor the best backed of the others. The latter was slow to begin, and King Balboa, Luminant, and Ladv M'Kenna led along the back. The latter went to the front after passing the six furlong post, and led Luminant and King Balboa round the far turn, Real Glad nearly falling just before the turn. Luminant joined Lady M'Kenna going up the hill, and were followed into the straight by the favorite and Money Peer. Luminant was in charge at the distance, and went on to win easily by four lengths from Rotor, who finished fast and beat Monev Peer by over half a length. King “Balboa was a head away fourth, and Felony next. Investments, £2,769-}. «*« - a For the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap Stormy was withdrawn, and Satrap was sent out a. good favorite, carrying more than Arikiwai, with Queen Balboa nearly as well backed, and Heather Lad, Thorndale, and Nincompoop the best backed of the others. Queen Balboa led out from _ Arikiwai and Countersign, the favorite being the last to move, and turning out of the straight the order was the same. Going into the back stretch Arikiwai, who had gone to tho front at the post, was leading Queen Balboa and Thorndale. Going to the six furlong post the favorite ran up on tho outside of his field, and at the far turn was in charge from Arikiwai, Nincompoop, Queen Balboa, and Thorndale. Nincompoop dropped out at the foot of the hill, and Arikiwai followed suit halfway up. Countersign ran tip to the leaders at the top of the hill, and was with Thorndale as they turned for home. Queen Balboa, Front Rank, and Satrap. Queen Balboa took charge nearing the distance post, and after shaking off Countersign and Thorndale she had to be ridden out to beat the fast-finishing Front Rank by half a length. Countersign was a head off third, followed by Thorndale and Satrap. Investments, £3,980. dt *' * Silver Coot was withdrawn from the Flying Handicap, and Sudden Storm was sent out a few pounds’ better favorite than Booster, with Stormy next in fancy and twice as well backed as Solrose, Circulation, and Good as Gold, who were evenly supported. Prorata o-ood start Monev Mine and Good; as Bold were the first to show out, _and after going a furlong Good as Gold went to the front, and was two lengths clear from Money Min© and Sudden Storm. Good as Gold had increased her lend to three lengths from Circulation, Money Mine, and Sudden Storm as they were turning into the straight, Racing to the distance post Sudden Storm caught Good as Gold and beat h-r home bv three lengths, giving Sir George Clifford his 600th win. Circulation was two lengths off third, with Stormy and Booster next. Investments, £3,956}. * « w ft> In the Hopeful Handicap Rin Tin Tin was a better favorite than Full leather, with Night March nearly as well and the only other well backed. From a good start Wine Tray, Night March, and Rin Tin Tin were the smartest to begin, Dumhlane being slow to find Ins feet and after rounding the turn Wine Tray and Rin Tin Tin went in in front and Night March and Full Feather were just behind them. Wine Tray and the favorite led into the straight Horn Full Feather, Night March, and Red Sea. The favorite was in trouble before reaching the distance post, and -hull Feather and Red Sea took charge. Opposite the lawn stand Night March got a "ood opening on tho rails, and just caught Full Feather, whose rider appeared to be caught napping, m time to make a dead heat. Red Sea was a length and a-half off. third, followed by Wine Tray, Money Mint, and Dumblane. Investments, £3,933}. :« * * * The betting on the Waihola Handicap was confined to Sky Quest, Spearmaid, and Tripaway, the former two being better backed than Tripaway. From a good line out Corinthia, on the rails, was the first to show out, but was almost immediately joined by Sky Quest and Quickform. Going to the far turn Quickform and Sky Quest took up the running and led on terms into the straight from Tripaway and Spearmaid. At distance post Sky Quest was just in front of Tripaway, with Spearmaid finishing well on the outside, and in a good finish the latter got up to boat Tripaway by half a length. Sky Quest was a similar distance off, third, followed by Quickform, Traction, and Rhondda. Investments, £4,272. • 4> ♦ * Limerick was given a great reception when he appeared in the birdcage for the Hazlett Memorial Plate. The champion waited on Nincompoop until passing the five-furlong post, and then ran to tho front. Countersign ran into second place half-way up the hill, but even under pressure could make no impression on Limerick, who beat last year’s winner by a length and a-half. Nincompoop was seven lengths off, thi^d. The sectional times, as taken by a private watch, were; the first furlong 14sec, second 26}ser, third 38 2-ssec, half-mile 51 2-ssec, five furlongs 65}sec, six furlongs Imin 19sec. Investments, £335, as-compared with £3,238 last year. « « « v Arikiwai and Overdrawn were withdrawn from the Abbotsford Handicap, for which Gay Sonnet was made a little better favorite than Wingatui, with Black Duke, Wayward, and Bilbo the best backed of the others. Bright Mark was the first to' begin and led Martis and Lucy Locket along the back. At the far turn Bright Mark was showing the way to Lucy Locket and Gay Sonnet, and at the turn for home Lucy Locket was well clear from Gay Sonnet, Wingatui, and Bright Mark. At the'distance Lucy Locket looked a good winner, but Wingatui finished very well and caught her opposite the stand and beat her home by a good length. Black Duke was three lengths away, third, followed by Gay Sonnet, Wayward, and fright Mark, Investments, £5,441,
During the afternoon two inquiries wore held by the Judicial Committee. After the' Warrington Handicap the Judicial Committee inquired into the complaint by T. Smith (Real Glad) that Felony (B. Brodie) had bumped Ins mount near the live-furlong post, causing Real Glad to go on his knees. After hearing the evidence of Smith and Brodie, and also of A. E. Ellis, the stewards decided that some interference probably took place, but_ there was not sufficient evidence that it was intentional. The chairman gave Brodie some advice as to his future riding. An inquiry was also held alter the Jockey Club Handicap into Satrap (D. Cotton) sending Thorndale (S_. Wilson) back by bumping near the six-tnrJqng post. Cotton admitted colliding w.th Thorndale, but stated that it was accidental, owing to his horse slipping just as it drew alongside Thorndale. Wison stated that the going was yeiy slippery, and very probably the happening was accidental. Tbe explanation by Cotton was accepted. The following are the results of tho races decided after going to press on Saturday:— HOPEFUL HANDICAP. SlOsovs; first 165, second 30, third 15. Two-year-olds. sf. 2—Sir Geo. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP
(SPECIAL TO THE ‘ StAE.’]
CHRISTCHURCH, February 13. In the big race, the Midsummer Handicap, Waitaki Girl, Acron, and Trimmer failed to go away correctly. When the field had settled down the order was Harry Audubon, Fight Ever, William the Great, Billy Sea, St. Maura, and Shine Soon. There was not much alteration over the next round, but passing the stand the last time Fight Ever showed the way to Harry Audubon, St. Maura, Pluto, Billy Sea, Shine Soon, and Author Jinks. The last-named made a fast run on tho far turn out of tho straight, and by the time the tanks were reached he was showing the way to Harry Audubon, St. Maura, Pluto, Shine Soon, and Machine Gun. St. Maura ran up to Author Jinks before the home turn was reached, and led into the straight from Billy Sea, Shine Soon, and Machine Gun. St. Maura held her own in the run to home, and beat the faster Machine Gun by two lengths. Billy Sea was a length away third, closely followed by Pluto, Author Jinks, Harry Audubon, Waitaki Girl, and WUhani the Great.
HOW NATIVE CHIEF WON
(Special to the ‘Sxae.’]
CHRISTCHURCH, February 13. The much-discussed exhibition match between Great Bingen and Native Chief could not be termed a success as a race. Both horses seemed to be in capital form for the contest, and the only question was an even getaway to ensure a satisfactory trial of speed. Unfortunately the whole race was spoilt at the start. Great Bingen appeared to be particularly keen to begin, while his rival was somewhat tho reverse, and seemed very casual about the proceeding. There were lour false starts, all of which were due to the vagaries of Native Chief. At the fifth attempt as tho starting point was reached Native Chief struck his gait just at a time when Withers was anticipating another unsuccessful go and checked Great Bingen very hard. This brought the two pacers almost together at the despatch point, but with the serious defect that Native Chief had gathered up nearly all his speed and was in top gear, while Great Bingen, who had been stopped on four previous occasions, was being pulled up. When Withers realised it was a start he set Great Bingen at it, but Native Chief was then well on the journey, and at the end ot a furlong was about four lengths in front. The pair raced in the same relative positions practically throughout the contest, and although the gap may have been a little less at the actual finish, Native Chief was not being pushed with the winning post in sight and defeat impossible.
TARANAKI MEETING
