Air F. M, Shortt (John Chambers and Son) left this morning, with his wife and daughter, for a business trip to England, and expects to be, hack at the end of the year. Air Arthur Barnett travelled from Dunedin to Christchurrli to-day. Mr J. Rennie, of Christchurch, passed through Dunedin this morning on his way home from Southland. Mr T. Gilkisnn, of Invercargill, was a. passenger for the north hy the through express to-day. At last night’s meeting of tho Hoard of Governors of Columba College, tho president, on behalf of the hoard, congratulated Aliss Ross on the _ success which was attained at tho musical ami othe rexaminntions at the close of last year. Three national scholarships were won, eleven passed Matriculation, and fourteen passed in music, which includes hath piano and violin. The President asked Miss Ross to convey to the members of the staff the board's sincere appreciation of the work done, during 1927, an dtrusted that the coming year would bo marked with tho same success.

Special bursaries to enable students to take a course in home science, under bond as teachers are annually awarded by tho Education Department, and some time ago the University Council was notific dthat only ten would he issued this year. Advice has now been received that the following have been selected from a large number of applicants:—Misses 0. C. Anderson (Lower Hutt), D. H. Bell (Wellington), P. M. Brass (Christchurch), C. E.
