CANTERBURY TURF NOTES
(Special to the ’ Stae.’] CHRISTCHURCH, February 9. At Addington to-day Great Bingen set out for a fast mile, accompanied by a galloper. The pacer looked fresh and bright, and moved with all his brilliancy He was not thoroughly extended at any part of the journey, and D. Withers kept a good hold of him, especially at the end of the work out. The first quarter took 30 l-ssec, the half-mile Imin 2 2-ssec, six furlongs Imin 33 2-sscc, and the full journey 2inin 4 3-ssec. Great Bingen seemed to ho a good deal better than in his previous work out at Addington two days previously. F. Christmas has Martarma going on well in his preparation for the autumn engagements He bears a greatly improved appearance as a result of the racing he has done this season, and a few fast gallops should bring him to his best. It is probable he will have a race in the Peninsula Cup early next month, after which he will go to Trentham. His only engagement there will ho in the Nexv Zealand St. Leger, as to wait for the Trentham Gold Cup would mean too long a delay in shipping him to Sydney. G Murray Aynsley has the two-year-olds, Starshooter and Chide, going on nicely in their preparation, and they xvill both be starters at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Meeting next week. Starshooter (by Archery from Stardancer) will have his first race in the Lyttelton Plate, while Chide (by Paladin from Reproachful) will compete in the Middle Park Plate.
