A PETITION REJECTED
TO THE EDITOB. Sir,— As ouo of the signatories to the request sent to the City Council in reference to the inadequacy of the city’s water supply, may I point out that, inasmuch as that the council may and does demand remuneration for services supplied (i.e., by rates), the ratepayers are equally entitled to demand that such services be rendered, and that the so-called petition was a justified demand to the council to honor its obligations to its citizens. When serious and urgent problems are at issue it is no time for finessing with the King's English, the health of the community must of necessity ever be its first consideration, and while such matters remain at stake it will be a sad day for this community if the frank, plain, and fearless speech of our Scottish forbears is to be ruled out for expediency. The subject under review is not one alone for Anderson’s Bay or any particular part of the city, but one affecting the whole of Dunedin. Councillor Begg’s statement, therefore, is timely, and the public at last has some knowledge of the city’s water supply. —I am, etc., Bobt. leaseb. February ft-
