UNEMPLOYMENT

LABOR URGES ACTION

[Per United Press Association.]

WELLINGTON, February 7

A joint statement was issued to-day by the Wellington Trades and Labor Council and the Alliance of Labor reviewing the question of unemployment in the dominion, and urging the Government and local bodies to take stops to organise adequate schemes to meet the difficulty, which, it is alleged, is still present, even at the busiest period of the year, The statement says that a deputation was arranged from tho Wellington Trades Council to meet tho Government, hut the council is still awaiting the Government’s pleasure to place before it the present state, of unemployment.

GOVERNMENT OFFICERS INVESTIGATING

[Special to the ' Star.’]

AUCKLAND, February 8

Personal investigation of the unemployment situation in Auckland is being made at present by Mr T. R. Aickin, an officer of the Prime Minister’s department. Ho will report to Mr Coates direct as to tho result of his inquiries, and meanwhile can make no statement for publication. Mr Aickin remarked last evening on the difficulty of accurately gauging the extent of unemployment. Social workers and secretaries of labor unions gave varying estimates of tho gravity of tho problem. It was necessary to his purpose, however, to make the closest possible computation of those requiring work, and it would help his investigation very much if all unemployed would register with tho Labor Department. If every man seeking a job wore listed there, the Government would have before it a complete statement, and would be able to take measures accordingly.
