A MINE EXPLOSION

MUCH DAMAGE DONE [Pee United Press Association.] WESTPORT, February 8. Through a fire breaking through the stoppings and gaining the rope haulage an explosion occurred which completely demolished the Clay Pit coal mine at Scddonville yesterday. The mine was owned by a co-operative party, and was clear at tho time. Once the fire reached the haulage rope the ventilation caused it to spread rapidly, and a, few minutes later an explosion occurred, completely wrecking the tunnel and mine. All the rails and tools were destroyed. The mine was part of tho old Cardiff Mine. A fire had been burning in it for tho past thirty years, and for years the fire had required constant attention. Before Christmas it gave a great deal of trouble.
