ON SPARKLING WATERS

ST. LEOHARDS-BURKES REGATTA OUTSTANDING SOCIAL AND RACING EVENT ■ In-the early days of Otago, the St. Leomirds-Burkbs regatta was- one of the big aquatic, attractions of the year. The revival of the regatta was made on Saturday afternpon, and, the complete success ensures the West Harbor regatta being made an annual fixture hereafter.--■A more glorious day could not have been ordered*. The sun was'shining, and the breeze from the north-east had .sufficient force to nrovide good racing for the yachts. The harbor was smooth. The racing throughout was exceedingly interesting, and the splendid response by the boat owners snows that regattas are welcomed. Socially and sporting, the regatta was an outstanding success—one of the best staged on the harbor for some years. • Nearly a thousand visitors arrived from the city, and every vantage point on the hillside was taken. And the public had plenty to keep them interested. Yacht and motor boat races were under way all the time, there were two exciting rowing races, a lengthy swimming programme, and numerous attractions on land. The regatta was splendidly managed, all the events being run off within three hours. Without doubt the help given by the visiting commodores and flag officers helped the management, but the local committees had shown from the time of mooting of the regatta that their assistance would be practical. Mr W. Davis was chairman of the and he had every help from the following officers: —Vice-chairmen, Messrs W. J. Bardsley and A. D, Asher; honorary, auditors, Messrs W. J. Bardsley and Q. Young; bon. treasurer, Mr E. L. Fairhall; non. secretary, Mr Chas. J, Hayward; handicappers—yachts, Messrs A. D. Asher and A. Grsyit; motor boats, Mr A. Lindsay; judges—Mr A. Wiseman, Messrs A. Lindsay, J. Hudson, A. Tannage, A. Miller (motor boats), Messrs H. Camp, W. E. Bagley, P. Young, A. D. Ascher, Thos. Anderson (yachts); clerk of course, Mr P. Drummond; starters, Messrs Thos. Anderson and J. Hudson; timekeeper, Mr W. < O. Martin; Press steward, Mr A. King; Accommodation Committee—Messrs P. L. Dawson (convener), H. Davis, C. G. Hook, J. Kewish, J. Cunningham, D. Guyton, J. Johnson; Amusements Committee —Messrs E. Bruco (convener), J. Bain, R. Dickey, G. Yoflng, J. Thurlow, P. Bain, R. G. Buchanan, PI. H. Clarke, H. Boyes, Miss King; Tea Rooms—Mrs W. Davis (convener), Mesdames W. J. Bardsley, R. G. Buchanan, J. Cunningham, —. Highley, A. Middleton, Miss M. Coutts. Rowing officials: Judges—Messrs W. Lysaght, W. Glengarry, and G. Duncan; umpire, Mr E. V. Fairbairn; starter, Mr E. V. Fairbairn; N.Z.A.R.A. representative, Mr E. V. Fairbairn. Swimming officials: Messrs Knights and D. Bannatyne. A fine stretch of open water was provided for.the yachts and motor boats, the course being from the flagship Medora to a pile off Curie’s Point down to Hayward’s Point, and across the. starting line, one round measuring a little over two and a-half miles. A good one-mile rowing course was also laid out. Results were as follows, actual racing times being given in parentheses : YACHTS AND MOTOR BOATS. YACHT’S, 12ft Gin and under. Once round. Colleen (C. Holier), Imin (48min 50sec) 1 Frolic (Davis), 2min (57min Slsec) 2 Harlequin (R. Harris), Strain (70min Usee) 3 Also started: Aloha, 9Jmin; Aranui, 2|miu. The Takapuna boat Colleen was first ' over' the' line. Holier, sailed a splendid race round the course and won easily, having about smin to spare after the deduction of the handicaps. Tiie race was not very, interesting owing to the wide margins between the five competitors, but Aranui and Harlequin had a good race, the latter, although in receipt of a good handicap, being only Isec behind Aranui at the finish. ' . YACHTS, 18ft and over 12ft Gin. . Twice round.

Mavis (H. Riddell), IJmin (67min 29tec) _ 1 Agnes (J. Hook), 3min (70mjn JOsec) v* Experiment (J. Thomson), 4 min (71min 43sec) 8 Also started; Eunice sor, Sea Hawk 4min, Mahana 9Jmin, Vivian llmin. The feature of this race was the smart sailing of Hugh Riddell, who was Otago’s skipper in the recent Cornwell Cup contest. Finish in his movements and accuray of judgment, combined with a splendid command of his boat and crew, set his performance as excellent. At gunfire, Eunice was right on the line and was first away, followed by Mavis. Eunice was first round the Curie Point pile, but Mavis’s spinnaker was out immediately. _ With a round to go, Eunice was still in the lead, mut Mavis was well out to windward. Beating up to Curie Point, Riddell sailed Mavis excellently, and fetched the buoy first. Eunice overreached and did not round till about half a minute later. A long way back came Agnes and Experiment. _ Sea Hawk was sailing disappointingly. Clever spinnaker work again helped Mavis, and she opened out a bigger margin on the run. On the thresh to home, Mavis pointed higher than Eunice, and beat the scratch boat home by _ 4sec. Agnes was the next to finish, with Experiment fourth. On time allowance Mavis won easily from Agnes. MOTOR BOATS, 7 miles per hour and under. Twice round. Myrtle (F. Asher), Gmin 40sec (43rain 22sec) 1 Vyella (J. Thorn), Gmin 40sec ' (43min 37sec) 2 Manuka (T. Maxwell), Gmin lOseo (45min 57sec) 3

Also started: Coastguard lOmin 50sec, • Doris lOmin, Tui 111. Bmin 20seo, Pakeha scr. Yyella took the lead on the run down from Curie’s Point, but Myrtle ivas running level with Vyella at the start of the final round. They had a commanding lead, the next boat being the limit outboarder followed by Doris, Manuka, and .Tui 111. The scratch boat was making little impression. Passing the flagship: on their way to Hayward's Point pile, for the short home stretch Myrtle was just ahead of Vyella, with Manuka ip third place. It was a keen race between Myrtle, and Vyella, and although the latter was.. .travelling faster at the finish, Myrtle, won by losec. Manuka was third, Tui 111.. fourth,; and Coastguard -fifth. Pakaha made up.none of her handicap. YACHTS, all-comers, twice roupd. For the Dawson .Challenge' Cup ' . . and miniature. . . Minnow r (M. The order at the finish was unchanged, but on time allowance Minnow won the •Dawstto’ Gflp- for the first time. Winifred sailed splendidly, taking' only a little over 3min longer to do the five-mile course than the scratch boat. ,j.

OUTBOARD MOTOR BOATS. Once round. ■

Fiasco (G. Sampson), Imin (lOmin

35seo) ... 1 Miss Whippet : (J, L. Paul), scr (lOmin 2osec) ... ... 2

Aloha (A. C. Paterson), scr, did not finish. , What promised to be a thrilling race did not eventuate. -There was plenty of excitement, however. Fiasco had a good start, and was bouncing along when the scratch boats started. Fiasco had a short stoppage at far mark, and Aloha drew nearer. ivOss Whippet was not showing her usual speed. Fiasco shipped a sea'over her engine, and was again held up, Aloha racing past her. Aloha looked all over tho winner as, in a shower of spray, she turned the Hayward’s Point mark for home. But the glorious uncertainty of the outboarders madeits entry. Aloha’s engine stopped within 100yds of the line. Fiasco buzzed past the derelict, whose driver was making frantic efforts to restart, while Miss Whippet was giving chase. Miss Whippet arrived past tho judges 40sec later. The winning boat averaged only fifteen miles an hour over the course.

MOTOR BOATS, all-comers, cruising boats. Twice round. Islay ( —), 4min 40sec 1 Laura (A. Begg), 3min 30sec ... 2 Silvocea (W. Timms’s, jun.), llmin 30sec 3

With half the distance covered ( Matai was leadnig Silvocea by 10«ec,_ Gloaming and Sylvia following four minutes later. Islay was travelling well in fifth position, another minute behind. Jewel was well out of the race, while Ngaio was making little impression on the leaders. The M’Pherson-built new launch Islay raced consistently, and won after a keen and long chase. SPEED BOATS. Twice round. Mystery (C. SolV), 40sec 1 Miss Bruce (P. Drummond), scr ... 2 June (W. Goodlet), smin ... ... 3 The only starters. It was a thrilling race. June'was overhauled about threequarters of a mile to home by Mystery, with Miss Bruce lessening the gap appreciably. Mystery had a good lead roundin gthe final mark, but, all out, Miss Bruce came with a flash of sped but failed to reach Mystery by Isec. YOUTHS’ FOURS. Im. Port Chalmers No. 1 (C. Cramoncl, D. Millar, L. Madigan, 11, O’Brien) 1 North End No. 1 (W; Titchener, E. Wilson, C. Barton, A. Deans) 2 Jort Chalmers No. 2 (H. Hill, W. M’Connell, J. Anderson, A.
