AMATEUR ATHLETICS
CIVIL SERVICE SPORTS Good fields and close finishes made for an enjoyable night’s sport on Saturday evening, when the Civil Service Amateur Athletic Club staged its second meeting of the season under favorable weather conditions. There was quite a fair crowd of spectators, and, with a- track that was conducive to good times, they witnessed some fast run races. The 120yds handicap was responsible for some good running, the scratch man, C. M. Olsen, registering 12 3-ssec against a slight breeze in his heat. The final, however, went to the consistent Caversham sprinter, S. F. Duncan, who was on the syds mark, and the Caversham Club also accounted for the mile handicap, W. Murphy (95yds) securing a popular win in 4min 29sec. The BSoyds relay was run at a fast clip, Civil Service filling first and second places. The No. I’team was disqualified, however, the No. 2 team receiving the verdict. The cycling events were keenly contested, and some splendid finishes were seen. The ex-professional E. Palmer, made a successful entry into amateur ranks by winning the milo handicap from scratch in 2iuin 31sec, the threemile handicap going to S. Bremford (scr), who heal the ex-Otago champion, C. M. Nicholson (scr), after a sterling race. Nicholson, however, had not ridden in' competition preciously this season.
