ALBION'S STRONG LEAD
CENTURIES IN THIRD GRADE. By defeating Grange on Saturday Albion established a lead for the shield which gives them a good chance or retaining tho honor of being the champion club of Dunedin. Grange could not come within 137 runs of sot by their north end rivals, and had to follow on. Galland made a valiant attempt to stem tho tide in the nrst knock, hitting up 65 before putting his leg in front. In the follow on M'Mullan played an unusually forceful innings of 69, and Elmes got into the 30's. Shepherd was troublesome on a, wicket that was by no means perfect, and took six wickets for 6<. Carisbrook declared right away and had no difficulty in disposing of Dunedin. Indeed, the latter were all out twice in the afternoon for totals of 14J and 160, but time did not permit of the former gaining a. three-point win, though they needed only 20 runs. Dickinson, Blunt, and Douglas secured most of the wickets. A fine score was put up by the Albion third grade team against Cansbrook, the total being 333 for two wickets, R. Silver making 166 not out and Campbell 106 nob out. This is Silver’s third and Campbell’s second century this season. ALBION v. GRANGE.
With nine wickets down for 323 Albion resumed against Grange on the North Ground, but after M'lvor had added 5 to his score Wilson was caught behind the wickets, and the innings closed. Knight and M'Mullan opened for Grange, but the left-hander was taken in the slips when he had scored but half a dozen runs. This was a bad beginning, but when Alloo was finely caught in the slips by Vorrath for 7 things looked black for the batting side. Meantime, however, Knight had been laying on the_ wood in refreshing style until he had pulled a. ball from Blamires into his wicket. 'Three wickets were down for_ 54 when Galland was joined by Conradi, but the latter, and also Elmes aml Chadwick, who followed, added very little_ to the total, which at Chadwick’s dismissal was 69 for six wicket,s. It was then that Brown came to the rescue, and, with Galland hit up the runs quickly and well. Changes of bowling had no effect on either bar until Galland tried to punch a short one from Blair out of the ground, missed, and was given out Ibw. The Grange skipper had played a fine, free innings, which included no fewer than five 6’s. He and Brown added 82 for the seventh wicket. At 46S Brown cocked a bumpy on© up and was easily- caught and bowled. Walker was soon out, but Tonkinson rattled up 10, and the innings closed tor 190. Being 147ffiohind, Grange followed on, Alloo accompanying Knight to the wickets this time to open. The termer was soon out, however, being nicely caught at deep forward square log from a hook. M’Mullan hit out and Mas rather uppish for a while, but steadied down later and carried Lis bat for 69. Elmos helped, too, playing freely and well for 30. Conradi also took toll of tho bowling, and knocKcd nji 23, while Brown followed up his first innings success by remaining at tin. wickets till “.stumps” and_ scoring 15.
