SAMOA FERMENT
m NELSON REPLIES COPRA DEALS HOT THE TROUBLE [Pee United Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, February 4. The Hon, 0. F. Nelson, after consultation with his solicitor, Sir John Findlay, published in the ‘ Star ’ a lengthy statement in regard to the Samoan situation, reserving criticism of the Royal Commission’s report until the evidence is made available. Replying to the Premier’s statement that " ‘ the administrator’s experimental native copra selling policy was largely responsible for the present movement,” Mr Nelson says; “ Tiie Prime Minister knows that the administration did not start handling native copra until March, 1927. Ho knows that the trouble in Samoa began long before that.” His (Mr Nelson’s) first complaints to the Premier were made in September, 1926, and the trouble was well started before then. “ Tho Prime Minister well knows that the administrator’s dealings in copra were mere retaliations against mySelf. Prohibition has nothing to do with the present unrest, and Mr Coates knows that.” Mr Nelson protests against sending extra police to Samoa, as unnecessary.
