FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED
STOCK BUYER FOUND IN HARBOR DEEP WOUNDS ON FAGE AND BACK OF HEAD |Pee United Peess Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 4. The body of a man, believed to be that of Charles James Mahan, of Nile street, Timaru, was found in Lyttelton Harbor, off Gladstone Pier, early this morning. It was badly battered, and foul play is suspected. Mahan was a stock buyer by occupation. The body was fully dressed, and in the pockets were a motor driver’s license and an insurance policy, but only threepence in-cash. There were deep wounds on the nose, chin, and back of the head. He was seen alive last night at 8 by some boys, being then near Gladstone Pier, and he said he was catching tho train back to Christchurch. When the body was discovered by Samuel Gilray, a night watchman, blood was still gushing from the man’s head, and his coat and shirt were saturated. The police believe that robbery was the motive of the crime, and that it was committed late last evening. Mahan was about fifty-five years old.
