The Public Prosecutor at Oldenburg states that there is no evidence to justify the prosecution of the sergeantmajor. His estates were acquired during the inflation period, and the authorities, despite local gossip, do not believe that his wealth originated from British wages for treachery. The Deutsche Zeitung says that the suspect carried on business at Ahlhorn as a dealer in provisions and spirits, in which immense fortunes were made after the war.
