At the second annual meeting of the Couils, Somerville, Wilkie, Ltd., Sick Benefit Society Mr J. J. S. Johnson presided. The report and balance-sheet showed the society to be in a flourishing condition. The year was commenced with a membership of 125. £l3O 5s was received in subscriptions, and the balance from, last ear was £2O 19s 4d; £6B 12s 6d was paid out in sick benefits, and £2 12s 6d to members leaving, and £55 was refunded as dividends, this representing GO per cent, of contributions. A reserve fund of £25 Is lOd, together with a donation of £25 from the directors, was carried forward. An application from the members of the Christchurch branch to join the society was favorably received by the committee.
Thomas Moran, licensee of the Shamrock Hotel, Wellington, was fined £lO for selling liquor after hours, being held responsible for the act of the barman. The latter, Leslie. Lee, was fined £5. The magistrate issued a warning that if there was a repetition of the offence the license would be in danger. A number of men were fined for being on the premises. The old-fashioned girl who used to go in for frills are now coming out strongly for thrills,.
