EMPIRE Elinor Glynn’s novel, ‘lt,’ was expressly adapted lor Clara, Bow, who tills the chief role of the screen version of the story, which is being shown at the Empire Theatre. Miss Bow has the part of a vivacious shop girl with but a limited education, possessing the unusual power of ‘lt,’ an invisible emanation, said to exude Irom certain human beings making them irresistible to all with whom they conic in contact. With the aid of this strange power she wins the attention of the president of the department store in which she works, and causes him to IaII in love with her. The romance and misunderstandings which follow, leading up to a thrilling yacht wreck and rescue in mid-oecan, are presented with exceptional skill and lavishness. Antonio Moreno plays the leading male role. William Austin, Priscilla Bonner, Julia Swayno Gordon, and Jacqueline Gadsdon are also in the cast. Excellent supporting pictures arc shown, and the Empire Select Orchestra renders a tine musical programme, under the direction of Mr Chas. Parnell. OCTAGON In ‘One Increasing Purpose,’ the Fox Films version of A. S. M. Hutchinson's well-known novel, is embodied the anther’s idea of the solution of the problems which confront flic world today—namely, that the secret of happiness is kindness towards one’s lellowinoii. The inspiration for the story and the title is said to conic from Tennyson’s confession of faith, “i doubt not through the ages one increasing purpose runs.” Edmund Lowe plays the role of Sim Paris, the visionary whose search for the “Purpose” behind the scheme of things provides the plot of the story. Holmes Herbert is the downtrodden brother, Charles, who finally kills himself when all of his dreams come tumbling down about his cars. Huntley Gordon is Andrew, the eldest brother, whose high finance almost ruins the lives of his entire family. Lila Lee, May Allison, and Jane Novak have the featured female roles. Others in the cast arc Emily Fit/.roy, Frank Elliott, Pat Sommcrsct, George Irving, Josef Swikard, Nicolas Sousauni, and Tom Maguire. The usual high standard of music is rendered by the Octagon Orchestra, under Mr L. D. Austin. QUEEN’S AND KING EDWARD Lon Chaney has one of the most interesting roles in his entire career in ‘Tell It' to the Marinos,’ an epic _of romance and adventure with the marine corps, now showing at the Queen’s and King Edward Theatres. Lie is seen as a veteran sergeant, hero of a dozen battles; a veritable bulldog of the service. It is a huge production filmed with the co-operation of the United States Government. William Haines, of ‘ Brown of Harvard ’ fame, plays the romantic load as a young marine recruit, and Eleanor Boardinaii is the heroine. The cast includes Carmel Myers, Eddie Grihhon, Frank Currier, Mitchell Lewis, Maurice Kains, an others of note. EVERYBODY'S ‘Evening Clothes,’ which is npw being screened at the Everybody’s Theatre, depicts a French nobleman who is married for his fortune. Ho loves his wife, but she despises his nnconlhness, so he takes a trip to Paris to become sophisticated, but it is not before lie has lost part of his fortune that his wife returns. Adolphe Menjon is the star in Hie picture, while Virginia Valli’s beauty, charm, and ability arc points which strike one in Her portrayal in this picture, Noah Beery and Louise Brooks arc also prominently featured. Lewis Stone is the star with Billie Dove and Lloyd Hughes in Hie second picture, ‘An Affair of the Follies.’ Lewis Stone is in Hie rule of a millionaire broker and theatre patron, and Miss Dove appears as a chorus girl who retired to marry a penniless clerk, played by Lloyd Hughes. PLAZA AND GRAND One of the screen’s most thrilling photo-plays is now being shown at Hie Plaza and Grand Theatres in ‘The Overland Limited.’ The story of this railroad romance is an original from the pen of Jas. J. Tynan, scenarist of 1 The Great Divide,’ and other hits, and contains romance, drama, comedy, and thrills in equal measure. Malcolm M'Grcgor has the ♦principal male role of David Barton, a young railroad engineer, who, despite severe obstacles, designs and erects a railroad bridge which saves the company millions of dollars. Olive Borden, a new screen discovery, plays the part of David’s sweetheart, Ruth Dent. ‘The Riding Rascal,’ starring Art Acord, is also showing.
