It is understood that tho United States will next week reply to the French proposal ol tariff reciprocity that America cannot discuss questions under tho existing tariff law. Some quarters indicate that a trado war between the two countries is 'inevitable, and it is probable that President Coolidgo will cither issue au embargo against French goods ns a reprisal or pai.se tho rates 5U per cent, above tho existing figures. These powers were granted to the President under the Fordney-M.'Combcr law. It is pointed out, however, that in accordance with the present trado volume both countries would suffer equally in any such conflict.
