SUICIDE AT PIANO
Having closed the doors and windows and turned on all the gas jets, an American painter, Mr Lawrence Murphy,- well known to the colony at Montparnasse, Paris, sat down at his piano and played Chopin until death stilled his lingers. His landlady heard him playing in the early hours of the. morning, and then the music stopped and she heard something fall Accustomed to Mr Murphy’s musical eccentricities, she paid little heed, and it was only after breakfast time that the tragedy was discovered. Mr Murphy was a .successful painter, and his works were already bringing him to the forefront of the young school of American painters. It" is thought , that mental depression following an unfortunate love affair caused him to commit suicide.
