OTAGO HUNT CLUB
A SUCCESSFUL MEETING Tho Otago Hunt Club’s annual race meeting was held in fine but dull weather at Wingatui, and opened the 1927-28 season in Otago very successfully. The attendance was good, the gate receipts being nearly £SO better than last year, and the totalisator investments (£16,6944) showed an increase of £712 on the 1927 figures. The course was in much hotter order than many expected, and the postponement of the meeting from tho previous Saturday was fully warranted. The meeting should turn out successfully financially for tho club, and was generally votcc. an excellent afternoon’s sport. Tho starting was in the hands or Mr D. 0. Jolly, who had several difficult horses to despatch in some of the Hat races, and was having his first experience with an up-to-date starting hairier. Though a couple of tho starts were rather straggly, his work improved as he became accustomed to the barrier. Mr A. D. Edgar, another honorary official for the day, gave his decisions promptly Irom tho judges box, and they appeared to meet with the public’s approval. Mr 0. E. Kus'sell’s handicapping provided some good racing, and the general management of the mecting_under Mr C. R. Camas capable supervision was excellent. An interesting parade of n dozen two-year-olds, most of whom are engaged in the M'Lean Stakes, to bo run at the D.J.C. Spring Meeting next montli, was staged just after the Hurdle Race, and they were a very nice lot of youngsters. The field was sprinted down tho straight, and Mr W. Gardiner s bay fillv Waving Corn, by Solfenno from Ro'salita, a sister to the dam of Roseday, hopping out very smartly, led them home. The following concludes our report of the meeting:—

Ronaki was challenged by bchoD tische at the distance post, and in a splendid finish the former just beat the Invercargill-trained mare by a veiy short head. Rory O’More, Busy Lad, and Royal Head were next. Time, Imin 17 l-ssec.
NOTES OH THE RAGING 4 [By St. Clair.] The Babo was made about £GO better favorite than Fabriano in the Sea View Hunters’ Hurdles, and they carried more than half the money invested on the race, Thistlecrowu and Aicos being
tho best backed of tho others. Monko led Fabriano to the first hurdle, which tho former was inclined to run down. After jumping the stand fence Arcos and Fabriano moved up to Monko, and going into the back stretch Monko and Fabriano were well clear from Arcos and Thistlecrown, Fabriano lost a lot of ground at the fence near the sixfurlong post, where Bandolero tell. Fabriano was in charge at the far turn from Monko and Tho Babe, and, leading the latter over tho last fence, beat him home by a length and a-nalr. Thistlecrown was two, lengths away third, Monko a bad fourth, and Arcos, who stopped badly at the end of _nmc furlongs, last. Investments, £l,l^. In the President’s Handicap Ronaki was sent out just over £SO better backed than Schottische, the pair of them starting from the outside ot the field. Ark Royal, Credit, and | lying Mist were the best backed of the others. From a bad line Schottische, Arch Abbey, Ark Royal, and the faworite were left, and Credit at once showed out and led Flying Mist, Appian Way, and Great Spear round the tar burn and to the three-furlong post, where Ronaki displaced Great Spear. Credit led Flying Mist and Appian Way into the straight. At the distance post Appian Way was done with, and Ronald was almost on terms with Credit, who was beginning to stop. In© effort was too much for tho favorite, who dropped back, and hlying Mist beat Credit home by a length. Ronaki was five lengths off third, with Hildreth and Appian Way next. Investments, £I,bU-. Wingatui, Soltoe, Black Duke, and High Gear were withdrawn from the Jockey Club Handicap, for which Arnent was made just over £BU better favorite than Vaward, the P a; r being much better backed than hairy Tidings and Courtly Rose, who were the next best fancied. From a straggly start Courtly Rose, Divinial, and Fairy, I idings were badly left. Hurdy Gurdy at once took charge, and led along the b,.-k after passing the six-furlong post from Blue Dragoon, Divinial, and Arpent, and there was no change until racing for the homo turn, where Vaward got a nice run on the rails and ran up to second position. He caught Hurdy Gurdy at the distance post, and ran home a very easy winner by three lengths from Hurdy Gurdy, who was the outsider of the field. Arpent was over five lengths further back, and was placed third; but from the Press stand, admittedly a bad angle, Blue Dragoon appeared to finish third. Arpent was next, and Fairy Tidings last. Investments, £2,212}. Only Lady Sartorze with withdrawn from ‘the Otago Hunt Club Steeplechase, for which Royal fashion was sent out nearly £IOO better favorite than Message Boy, with Andy, Isla Bank, and Night, Raid Iho best supported of the others in a good betting race. Andy and Monko acd Maitapuke, Royal Fashion, and Decision for nearly a round, then Andy dropped his ridci «t the sod wall, and Royal fashion, who had had a life at tho first of the stand double, took charge and Jed Monko, Decision, and Isla, Bank oyer the post and rails, where Message Boy ran off, and the wall and ditch, where Night Raid fell, but was remounted. Going along the back, Royal 1 asliion drew right away, and, giving a perfect exhibition of jumping, won, pulling up, bv 100yds from Decision, who beat isla Bank by five lengths. Matapuko was a similar distance away, fourth. Manama fell at the sod wall; all the others finished. Investments, £1,832. Cora Locanda, in T. Wallis’s stable at Washdyke, was sent out nearly an evenmoney chance in the Wingatnl Trotting Handicap, in saddle, with Pert Pointer, Red Abbey, and the coupled pair, Huegood and Wallace Mac, the best fancied of the others. Ihe favorite lost half a dozen lengths at tho start, and Red Abbey and Dan Huon were just in front of Cocoa and Cora Loeanda as they passed the stand. The latter ran into third place going into the back stretch, and after passing i e six furlong post just headed Red Abbey and Dan Huon. these three ran in close order to tho entrance to the straight, whore the favorite broke, and Red Abbey drew away to win easily by four lengths from Dan Huon, who was twenty lengths in front of Cora Locanda, Bcrma Pointer, and Merrigal next. Armchair led Fabriano and Royal Dispatch, who broke away twice from the barrier, out of the straight, and going along the, back Armchair and Luthy led Fabriano and Ecuador. There was no change till three furlongs from home, where Fabriano moved up, and he turned into tho straight on terras with Armchair. At the distance fabriano showed in front, and won by a length and a-qnarter from the lavoriy. Ecuador was eight lengths away, third, 1 allowed by Luthy and The Babe, who ran a poor race. Investments, £2,123. la a field of ten starters Raimi was sent out about £GO better backed than Peter Marion and Osterman in tho Brockville Steeplechase Handicap, tho bracketed pair, Kipling and Tuki, being the only other chance well backed. Osterman, Rauui, and Cashman led the field over tho first five fences, and Per.-.m Marion fell at the next, the post and rails near the mile post. Going along the hack, Raimi drew out clear from Osterman, Cashman, and Galway, who wore running together. Do Cruse fell at the post and rails at tho far turn, and going to the water jump Osterman set out alter Raimi, but the latter held his advantage, and beat the Winton-traincd ‘horse home by three lengths. Galway was ton lengths further back, third, followed by Thistlecrown (who made a forward move at the water jump, hut was unable to sustain it), Cashman, and Tuki. Investments, £1,872-}. The field for the Vanxhall Handicap was reduced by the withdrawal of Ark Royal, Arrowy, Top Gear, Appian Way, Royal Asset, and Hildreth. Royal Head was finally sent out a few pounds’ better favorite than Money Mine, with Ronaki and Schottische the host backed of the others. Divinial gave trouble at tho start, but the field was despatched in a good line, Royal Head being the first to show out. After going half a furlong, Ronaki ran'to the front, and led Schottische, Divinial, and Money Aline round tbc far turn. Divinial had dropped out before reaching tho homo turn, where Ronaki was a couple of lengths clear from Schottische and Money Mine. Tho latter attempted to get through on the rails inside the distance post, where Schottische challenged Ronaki .
