SOUTH ISLAND BEATS NORTH In the intcrisland hockey match at Christchurch the South attacked strongly from tlio start, but M Leod was solid at centre half for tiie Northern team, and Eoborts took the ball into the circle ami netted a fine goal for tho North. Then the South attacked strongly: W. Bell missed an open goal, and then Whitwell’s shot was stopped by the North custodian, hut S. Bell followed in and equalised tho scores. Shortly afterwards S. Bell again put the ball “into tho net, but he was ruled off-side. , . , . The South were now having the better of the game, but the North goalkeeper stopped a couple of hot shots. 6. Bell secured and notched another coal for the South. H. Hore centred for B. Sherrills to score with a brilliant shot, which gave the custodian no chance. Half-time: — South 3 North t Soon after resumption S. Bell netted from close range. The Northerners, indulging in hard hitting, kept the Souht at bay ; Browne and Freethy showed up in a North forward rush, but Soper and Ireland were playing solid defensive games. W. Bell and E. Sherriffs followed in after-a long hit, and >V. Bell put in South’s fifth go.al.
South came again, Whitwell’s shot being Mocked. North took a turn at attacking, but they could not reach the circle. North livened up, and irom a cornel} Freethy sent in a lightning shot, which Snooks stopped. Whitwell netted another goal for the South right on tho call of time.
