During the hearing of a case in the j Commonweal tli Arbitration Court the i Chief Justice said: “1 am inclined to think that wo are a nation of spendthrifts, and are going to bo pulled up by a heavy reckoning very soon.” The remark was prompted by counsel referring to Australia’s unfavorable trade balance when arguing that the progress of the secondary industries in Australia was not accompanied by a decline of imports as the results of increased activitv.
