RAGLAN BY-ELECTION
COUNTRY PARTY'S DEBUT AIM—TO MAKE FARMING PAY! [l’es United Press Association.] HAMILTu.i, September 16. The Country Pnrty’s candidate for tbo Raglan by-clcction, Air C. A. Magner, opened bis campaign at Tc Kowhai last night. Ho said the remedy for the present unsatisfactory position, as far as the farmers were concerned, was to be found in a Country Party. There had been great hostility in certain quarters to the formation of the party, but he was certain the day would come when it would bo a power for good in the land. There was discontent and dissatisfaction throughout the country with the present Administration. Mr Magncr said the Country Party’s aim was to make farming a payable proposition. Ho advocated a wisely adjusted income tax on the basis of a man’s ability to pay, rather than in proportion to his ability to purchase. Economy was sadly needed in public expenditure. The Country Party supported the League of Nations, and preferred treaties to war.
Fo gave the pnrty’s views on defence, and considered that mobilisation should embrace industrial resources as well as men.
