CAR AT BANQUET
DRIVERS DINE AT TABLE. Sitting in the same car which they drove to victory in what has been acclaimed as the most dramatic race ever run, Mr S. C. H. Davis and Dr J. A. Bcnjafield were the guests of honor at a banquet at the Savoy Hotel. Dr Benjaflcld, who is a Harley street specialist, and Mr Davis recently won in a British car the Le Mans Grand Prix twenty-four hours’ endurance race against an international gathering of racing motorists. They were involved in a thrilling smash during the race, in which six cars crashed one upon another in succession, but the British drivers’ Bentley, after slight repairs, was able to continue the race and finish 312 miles ahead of its nearest competitor. The victorious car—still dusty and ■n-easy from its race over .1,472.6 miles 0,100 of which were run with a bent front axle), and bearing obvious signs of its crash—was hauler] into one of the principal banqueting rooms of the Savoy Hotel. Just before dinner began there was a surprise for the guests. When they arrived, the car was hidden by a screen at the far end of the room, but as soon as the diners were seated the screen was removed and the car, with the victors in it, was driven into the centre of the room, where the tables wore placed to accommodate it in the shape of. a lucky horseshoe.
The guests of honor dined, in tin; car itself, special adjustments having been made for the purpose.
