'ONE INCREASING PURPOSE'

EXCELLENT SCENERY, FINE STORY. The old Ship Inn, on High street, in Southwark, is one of the London landmarks shown in Eox Films’ version of 1 One Increasing Purpose,’ which comes to the Octagon Theatre to-morrow. This is one of the few surviving old coaching inns of London, and was used until the time of Charles Dickens as one of the principal termini of the stage coaches goin;f into London from country towns All of the exteriors in this production were made in and around London, in order to show the actual location described in A. S. M. Hutchinson’s novel. This screen version of the hook by Hutchinson is said to exceed in dramatic values and presentation the Eox production of 1 If Winter Comes,' Mr Hitchinson’s other novel, which proved such a sensation a few years ago. Edmund Lowe is cast as the leading man, Bim Paris, around whom tho storyyrevolves. Ho is supported by a particularly well chosen cast of all-star performers, which includes Lila Lee, May Allison, Holmes Herbert, Huntley Gordon. Lawford Davidson, Jane Novak, Emily Eit/.roy, George Irving, Josef Swikard, Nicolas Sonsamii, and Tom Maguire. The story has to do with Sun Paris, a visionary young man who returns from Franco to find his lamily in a constant state of quarrelling and unrest. Ho cannot fathom why it is that iio has hoop saved irom death while in action, for he has been in tho thick of the tight, and the more ho thinks the more lie wonders over tho “ purpose ” behind it all. His search lor the reason tor the present scheme of things and tho final solution of his problem forms a soul-stirring drama that has been transferred beautifully to the screen. Harry Beaumont, director of 'Sandy,’ has caught the spirit of the book, and in bringing the characters to the screen seems but to make them walk out of the pages across tho silver shoot. The photographic effects are said to he wonderful.
