LEAGUE OF NATIONS
ASSEMBLY MEETING BRITAIN AND THE PROTOCOL Mil RAMSAY MACDONALD’S VIEWS. Press Association—iiy Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, September Li. Mr Ramsay MacDonald, in a letter to tlio ‘Daily Herald,’ says: “The debates at Geneva eanso great concern, hut 1 doubt if ever in our time Britain has been put in a more awkward position as a Continental Power. M. Daudurand’s speech also shows that Sir Austen Chamberlain’s statement is untrue. Delegates from the dominions in 3924 unanimously accepted the idea of the Protocol, and wo have now to find how far the dominions can bo accomodated to a common Empire policy which can bo fitted with the Protocol_ idea. I favor tho idea that a commission of the League should be appointed to consider tho draft of tho .1924 treaty. Meantime, we should secure consultation with tho dominions, even, if necessary, by a special session of tlio Imperial Conference, to discuss tho obligations which tho Protocol imposes on the Empire, and consider the optional clause in connection withe the Hague Court.” THE LEAGUE’S FINANCES. LONDON, September 14. (Deceived September 15, at 1.30 a.m.) The Genova correspondent of ‘The Times ’ states that the League’s budget for 1928 is £987,000, an increase of 1.4 per cent, over the 1927 expenses. The secretariat offices in various capitals absorb £533,000, tho International Labor Office £330,000, the Hague Court of Justice £36,000, and buildings at Geneva £54,000. The cost of the Assembly for 1933 is estimated at £II,OOO, council meetings £3.000, and commissions’ conferences £75.000.—‘ The Times.’
