DETECTIVE’S DISMISSAL

GOMKISSIOfiER DEFEBDS AGTIOf! [Per United Press Association,] 'WELLINGTON, September 15. Counsel for Detective Cooper, who was forced to resign after » recent court case, took exception to tho Commissioner’s action on tho ground that a civil action was no reason for dismissing him. If any action was contemplated it should have been taken when Cooper was fined £2 at a private police inquiry. Ho was also refused pay for tho forty-six days’ leave to which he was entitled. The Commissioner’s reply is that when Cooper was fined he was not fully acquainted with all the facts of the case, and when he learned them he decided that Cooper must go. If he had hot resigned ho would have been dismissed. _ Leave in the Police Force Was a privilege, and not a right, _ aiid Cooper had forfeited his claim to it by his action. [Damages were given against Cooper for assaulting a civilian.]
