HOUSEKEEPING AND THE TARIFF
ASK THE WIFE [Fbom Oub Parliamentary Beposteb.] WELLINGTON, September 13. If any family man wants to find out just what reduction the Government has given him in taxation by means of the revised tariff all he Ims to do is to cut down his wife’s- monthly housekeeping allowance by the amount of his extra income tax. Such was the ingenious suggestion made by Mr Wilford (Hutt) in the House to-night. “It is quite simple, ho said. “Let him ascertain what additional sum he Inis to pay in income tax annually, then divide that by 12, and each month reduce the wile’s allowance by that twelfth part. Just what has been done will scon bo discovered.” (Laughter.) An Hon. Member: It is not safe to try it. Mr Sykes: How would yon find out it you hadn’t got a wile? Mr Wilford: I’m not thinking of those poor derelicts who are rudderless and wingless.
