At last evening’s _ meeting of the council of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association, the president (Mr T. Somerville) welcomed back Mr J. Sutherland Ross, the vice-president of the association, rvho recently returned from a trip to Britain. .Ho trusted that Mr Boss’s visit had been a pleasurable one. Two new members of the council, Messrs J. Y. Love and Oram, were also welcomed- Mr JHogg said they took it as a compliment that Mr Ross bad been appointed vice-president, particularly as bo represented one of the largest industries in the dominion. Mr Boss said he had come back much refreshed, and explained that he was more strongly convinced than ever of the necessity for supporting New Zealand-made goods. Ho hoped to be able to assist the association in every way possible. Mr Love also returned thanks for the welcome extended him.
At the meeting of the South Otago Hospital Board yesterday correspondence was received from Mr James Gumming, tendering his resignation as chairman and as a member of tlio board. The resignation was received with regret. It was agreed that a letter of thanks and appreciation be sent to Mr Gumming, and tbe hope was expressed that ho would soon he restored to health. The hope was also expressed that the Olutlia County Council might agpin appoint Mr Gumming and grant him the necessary leave of absence. Mr Jasper Clark was appointed chairman until the end of the term in April of next year. Recent arrivals to the Grand Hotel include Mr Robert Corlctt (Chicago, U.S.A.), Mr A- Myall (Auckland), Messrs B. James, M. If. Barnett. S. Barnett, Misses Delany and M. Whelan, and Mrs A. P. Taylor (Christchurch) . New visitors to the Excelsior Hotel are Mr George Bennett (Sydney), Mrs G. Sandford, Miss S- Christie, and Mr H. J. Lee (Auckland), Mr H. Watson (Napier), Messrs W. H. and L. Lambonrne (Timaru). At last night’s meeting of the University Ex-students’ Association, Mr Miekle was awarded the first prize as the best debater amongst tbe present students at the University. Miss Ida M. Cooper, organising secretary to the British and Foreign Bible Society, died suddenly at her lodgings yesterday. She was a daughter of Mr W. Cooper, formerly in the Treasury Department, Welling-' ton, and was secretary to Mr Wilford when be was Leader of the OppositionShe went Home during the war to take war work in hand.—Christchurch Press Association telegram.
The partner of Mr D. O’Conaell, contractor for the Dunedin Savings Bank, is Mr Peterson. The name was misprinted as Paterson. Three old identities whoso deaths have recently occurred are Mr David Buchanan, who came out in the Philip Lang; Mrs W. Perkins, a passenger by the Mooltan in 1849; and Mr W. Crammond, a Mary passenger in 1849, who settled on the Taicri. A London cable announces the death of Lady Mary Trefusias, sister of Lord Beauchamp.
