‘ONE INCREASING PURPOSE’

NEXT OCTAGON PICTURE Edmund Lowe is said lo give one of the finest dramatic performances of his career in ‘One increasing Purpose,’ the Fox Films’ version of the novel by A. S. M. Hutchinson, which comes to the Octagon Theatre for a six days’ run on Friday. Mr Lowe lias the role of Sim Pans, a visionary young man who returns from Franco to find his family in a constant state of quarrelling and unrest. Ho cannot fathom why it is that ho has been saved from death while in action, for he lias been in tho thick of the fight, and tbo more bo thinks the more he wonders over tho “ purpose ” behind it all. His search for the reason for flic present scheme of things and the final solution of his problem forms a soul-stirring drama that has been transferred beautifully to tho screen. Lila Leo is cast opposite Mr Lowe in tho role of las selisacrificing sweetheart. Jane Novak plays the part of his brother’s dissatisfied wife, Alice. Holmes Herbert characterises Charles, the brother, who is tied down with the cares of keeping charge of the affairs of his old Uncle Gaud, played by Josef Swikard. Huntley Gordon is Andrew, the oldest and wealthiest brother, whoso financial greed nearly wrecks the lives of his family. May Allison is his wife, who adopts a butterfly attitude toehold her husband. Lawford Davidson is a very human menace who comes between Alice and Charles, and Nicolas Sousanni is au extremely gruesome menace. Tho exteriors of this production were made in England, and through the courtesy and co-operation of the owner of a house in one of the fashionable London squares permission was granted one Sunday morning to nso the front doorstep. This was all very well, but it was necessary for Lowe to ring the bell and bo welcomed homo by his old friend the butler, and it seemed a rather delicate thing to ask tho lady of tin? house to allow a member of the company inside. However, as it happened, the owner solved the difficulty herself by offering the services ol her own butler lor the scene.
