ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

The (bird concert of the fortieth f,season ivill be given in It is Majesty s theatre on Saturday, September 17. Items have been chosen I'rom the works ot Devoid, Massenet, Auber, and Donizetti—names well known in the world of music. The principal work set down fur performance by the orchestra is the ‘ Hallct du Cid ’ (Massenet). five numbers of the suite are to be played, and they are brimful of quaint and charming melody. The work is mostly light and graceful, and Massenet has drawn largely upon the strings and wood-wind to obtain his effects. The overtures ‘ Zampa ’ (licrold) and ‘ Masaniollo ’ (Auber) are well known to music lovers, and, being bright and melodious, are welcome items on any programme. Of the old composers Donizetti occupies a high place as a master of melody, and many evidences of this gift are exemplified in a select tion from his opera ‘ Linda di Chamouni.’ A number which will lend variety to the orchestra’s contributions is a cornet and trombone duet, ‘ La -Declaration D’Amour,’ by Messrs E. Kerr and D. Loyd. The programme will conclude with a march, • ‘ Tcrok Magyar ’ (Reeder). The assisting vocalists are Miss Stuart Mitchell and Air W. G. llillikcr.
