RESCUE OF LAUNCH PARTY [Special ro «m ’ Stab.'] AUCKLAND,* September PL Sonic excitement was experienced by the passengers on the s.s. Kawau. which left Auckland lor Kawau .Island at II o’clock yesterday morning. When the vessel was nearing Whangaparaoa a distress signal was seen to issue irom a launch out from Tiri. Captain Olson immediately altered his course, \\ilh clever mauccuvring he managed, in a heavy sea, to have a line thrown on board, and tho launch was taken in tow to a sheltered bay in V hangaparaoa Passage. Tho launch was the Lancia, which had left Matakana in the morning for Auckland with a hockey team on board, comprising men and women. Engine trouble appeared to be the cause of distress, as tho vessel was drifting out to sea before a stiff westerly breeez.
