ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

STEWARD’S SUICIDE. W. Morgan, chief steward of the steamer Treworlas, which reached Auckland from New York yesterday morning, was lost at sea in the Pacific, when the vessel was 500 miles from Panama. Officers state that they saw Morgan clamber over the bulwarks, and before he could be prevented he threw himself overboard. A boat was launched immediately, and the crew searched for nearly two hours, but Morgan was not seen again. He was forty-three years of age, and his home was in Cardiff. He leaves a widow and one child. CAR OVERTURNS. A*'motor accident occurred on Sunday afternoon during a gale on a perfectly level straight road a couple of miles from Dannevirke. A car driven by Percy Meakin, aged seventeen, contained his two sisters, Alice and Gwen, and also Misses P. Haines and M. Mallet. While going along Laws road it suddenly swerved and overturned, and the occupants were thrown out. All were injured except the driver. Miss pwen Meakin (with a fractured arm and shock) and Miss Mallet (with severe concussion and abrasions) were the worst sufferers, and are at present in hospital. The car was much damaged all the spokes being smashed in three of the wheels. It is surmised that the wind got under the hood of the car, causing the driver momentarily to lose control.
