EXTRACTED FROM TAR. There seems to be no limit to what can be made from tar and bitumen by that modern wizard the chemist. For years past their various by-products have produced dyes of every conceivable color, while their contributions to the pharmacoeila are seemingly endless. Now comes along a now series of bituminous paints with advantages none made by the old process have, as well as a material for roadways which is claimed to be unlike anything yet made iu regard to durability and strength. To make a pure white paint out of bituminous substances seems incredible, jet such, as also every' color in the rainbow, is the case, to say nothing of metallic colors ranging from gold and bronze to aluminium having an enamelled surface like gloss. An immense advantage those paints ‘have is that they are absolutely water and dampproof; will withstand sea water, and within reasonable limits even acids; are a positive protection against dry rot in woods; can be applied even in their most delicate tints to surfaces already painted, and what, perhaps, is most important of all, is that they are cheaper than paints of which lead forms the basis. That this is no “fairy tale” rigorous tests made by science and research chemists, coupled with experience in their use over lengthy periods, have proved, for they have come out triumphantly through all trials.
