CYCLING RACING

TIMAIUI-CHRISTCHURCH [Per United Pr.r.ss Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. A hundred and three riders started from Timaru this morning on the long ride to Christchurch. Tho roads were good, but on the early part of_ the journey greasy patches gave the riders a pattering of mud. A light northeasterly breeze was against them. There were few falls, but a lair number of punctures. The winner, A. A. Morwood (Papanui), with a handicap of 16min, had a puncture at Temuka, and lost 6min, but joined the IGmin bunch, and led them along at the finish. Nine men entered tho Show Grounds together, and a desperate sprint over tho track for the finishing line ended in Morwood gaining the lead by half a length. Following arc the results: —A. A. Morwood (Papanui), IGmin, 1; E. A. M'Caskcll (Christchurch), 40min, 2; L. W. Hill (New Brighton), IGmin, 3; K. Lange (Yaldhurst), 20min, 4. Sixteen other cyclists came in as follows;—-J. W. Tho winner's time was till Mm in 15see. The fastest limo was registered hy H. G. Watson, scr, the time being 6ii .>1 min. fiOscc. The second fastest time was put up by L. W. Hill, on tho lOmin mark—fill 58min 18sec. FIFTY-MILE EVERT AUCKLAND, September 11. The fifty-mile amateur cycling road race championship of New Zealand was decided yesterday atfernoon. A feature of the race was the success of the Auckland riders, who filled the first six places and secured the fastest and the second fastest times. Tho winner, J. ii. Wade, off the 4min mark, had matters his own way at the finish, crossing the line with a good deal in hand. Ho also secured the fastest lime. He is a promising rider, and is only sixteen and a-half years of age.

C. G. Galbraith, who secured the second fastest lime, was on tho same mark as Wade, finishing 22sec after him. Tiie scratch division did not meet with success, MT'edries and Carswell, both of Wellington, being the only two to finish. Lukcy (Canterbury) punctured a tyre twice, M. J l . Byres (Auckland) retired with cramp, while H. J. Morris (Wellington) and G. Ericsson (Wanganui) met with mishaps which necessitated hospital treatment.

The conditions foi the race were unfavorable, the cold wind and heavy showers having an effect upon the contestants. Results:—J. H. Wade <4min), 2b 2(3min 27sec, 1; N. Fisher (12min), 2h .'Minin 4Gsec. 2; L. Wilson (Smin), 21i SOniin 47sec, S. C. G. Galbraith, second fastest time, 2h 26min 4'Jscc. The Auckland professional twentyfive mile championship was also decided, and resulted as follows; —F. Prior 1, A. White 2, J. Ilarcourt (Hamilton) A TWO-MILE HANDICAP A two-mile handicap bicycle raco under the auspices of the Otago Centro of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was hold at the Caledonian Ground in the interval of the Rugby League game, Otago v. Canterbury. Templeton, the scratch man, among nineteen starters, conceded Iboyds to J. C. Fogarty, the winner- The race was of interest all through, and the front markers made the pace so hob from the start that it was'not until about the sixth lap that tho back markers had a chance of pulling up. Trail (at 25yds), who was riding a great race and looked a likely winner at one stage, was unfortunate in that his handle bars slipped round, thus necessitating cautious riding for the remainder of the race. Trail promises well for this season. Fogarty showed great judgment in winning the race. The final result was:— ,T. C. Fogarty 1 R, Ravenswood ... 2 J. Campbell 3
