PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY
The society has been fortunate in securing for its next concert the services of Signor Giovanni Stella, an Italian Lyric tenor, who is at present on a visit to Dunedin, and has kindly consented to sing lor the society. Signor Giovanni Stella studied under Maestro Rinaldi, and bis first engagement was at the Polytechnic Theatie in Buenos Aires, where ho appeared in Puccini Opera, ‘La Tosca.’ He also sang in the some Opera- at a Thoatie Solis at Montevideo. He afterwards joined a concert company with -Mr Walter Aloccki, ami toured of tho important towns in South America. Tho party then toured Australia and mot with great success in Sydney. When the war broke out Signor Giovanni Stella volunteered for active service with the Australian Forces, and was at the front for three years, ufttil invalided home. He possesses a beautiful lyric tenor voice, and will bo heard in Italian, Spanish, and French numbers. Two of his items will be ‘Lolita,’ by BuzziPecchia, in Spanish, and ‘ Eligie ’ (Massenet), in French, and another item in Italian. The programme will also include _ Haydn’s _ ‘Farewell Symphony,’ which the society is performing for the second time; ‘ Alaroh Slav,’ by Tschaikoweky; ’cello solo with orchestral accompaniment, ‘Romance Sans Paroles, Simple Aveu,’ Mr Phil. Palmer being the soloist; whilst other orchestral items will make up a very interesting programme. Tho other vocalists for the concert will me AUss Doris M'Curdy and Air J B. Macpherson.
