On Thursday there | appeared to be a reasonable chance’ of ; deciding the programme of the cycling ' track, cross-country, and field events, but overnight rain blackened tho outlook, and late yesterday afternoon tho chairman of the Works Committee reluctantly bad to declare against the centre holding the carnival. A conference was held, at which it was arranged that the Now’ Zealand, cycle road race championship should start from the Su John Logan Campbell monument, thence out to Clevedon and back to the monument. In addition two cross-country races will be decided on the outside of the trotting track Onlv the three events named will be contested, the remainder of tho i programme being postponed until tho following Saturday. I This new turn of events means a| serious monetary loss to the Auckland i Centre, which has to meet a fairly; heavy bill of expenses, with no chance j of reimbursing 'tsclf. However, the executive views the position philosophically and with a busy season , in 1 sight 1 anticipates making good the loss / in the early part of the new season.
