UNPROVOKED ASSAULT
DAMAGES AGAINST POLICE OFFICER CPer United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 9. -Detective William Bobert Cooper was to-clay sued for £2B damages by Henry Mbrujngton Smith, a seaman, for injuries sustained in an unprovoked assault by Cooper. The magistrate gave judgment for Smith for £ls, with £3 13s (id medical expenses, and costs amounting to £B. Cooper had recently been found guilty at a police inquiry on tho charge of assault, and fined £2. Cooper was stated to have taken Smith to a room in the Taranaki Street Police Station, after questioning him in the street. Ho then punched him in the mouth, necessitating three stitches in his lip. Cooper also accused Smith of knocking about with undesirable people, when, in fact, Smith had only been ashore five hours.
