MENTAL HYGIENE

COUNCIL FORMED The meeting called to consider the formation of this council by a committee, of the Faculty of Medicine root last night in tho board room, Security Buildings. Letters were read from the Bishop of Dunedin (the Right Rev. 1. Richards) and from Sir LouL Barnett wishing tho movement‘success. Apologies were read from Drs Benhain, Lawson, Air White, Miss Young, tho Rev. U. E. Bellhouso, and Dr Dunlop. There were' present Dr Aloore (chairman), Dr Merrington, Archdeacon Whitehead, Rev. Moreton, Air J. AI. Callaway, Mr Soutcr, Dr Fisher, Drs Thompson, Falconer, Hcrcus, and Carmalt Jones, those present haying been elected by various organisations. ' The Chairman slated that two important prigjiples behind the mental hygiene movement were;—(l) No Government department or departments could alone, without the active cooperation of tho whole community, deal effectively with tho problems of mental hygiene. (2) The solution of these problems demanded first and foremost a study of the problems by properlytrained and informed minds in the general community. Tho meeting formed _ itself into a council of mental hygiene. A provisional executive was appointed, consisting of Dr Mooro (convener), Dr Falconer, Professor Lawson, Air J. AI Callaway, and Air Souter. The executive was requested to frame a statement of aims and objects, to consider the production of a suitable pamphlet, and the arrangement of a course of public lectures and other matters. x\ number of graphs showing an uncompleted statistical study of the magnitude of the mental hygiene problem in New Zealand wore exhibited, and supplied some remarkable and surprising figures.
