TROTTING. IMPROVERS’ RACES. [SCECIiL TO THB ' BIAH.'J AUCKLAnB, September 9. Not for years has any move in the trotting sport created so much discussion among trainers and owners as the action of the Auckland Trotting Club Committee in making improvers’ races at the club’s meetings open only to horses who'have a race record of 2.20 dr better to the mile. Dissatisfaction is expressed on all sides, the contention oeing that the class has been made too tight and that owners with really, useful horses have been debarred from securing the good stakes offered for the class of race referred to. Several trainers who were working horses at Epsom yesterday expressed the opinion that the Auckland Trotting Club Committee had not taken all the circumstances into consideration, and more than one made a point of emphasising the difficulty of qualifying for the improvers’ races It was the general opinion that while a horse might be able to go a mile in -2.20 at Alexandra Park he could not go bettor than 2.24 on any of the country tracks. Tho Epsom track was caved for all tho year round, was banked up and given all the attention necessary *to make it one of the best in the dominion. On tho other hand, the country tracks were only raced on once or twice a year, and were not banked at tho turns, and, therefore, could not possibly be as fast. SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP, GOODSELL AND BURNS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. VANCOUVER, September 8. Major Goodsell has cabled an offer to Burns, the Australian champion, to race here on May 24 next. Goodsell will not defend the title till then. Barry has challenged for a race in the autumn, but Burns’s challenge is the first consideration. AMOUNIS SCRATCHED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, September 9. Amouuis has been scratched for tho Chelmsford Stakes at the Tattersall’s races. BOXING, HEENEY AND UZCUDUN DRAW. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW Y'ORK, September 8. Tom Heeney , (New Zealand) battled fifteen plucky rounds to draw with Paolino Uzcudun at Madison Square Garden. Tho latter forced the. fighting throughout, and several times was on the verge of delivering a knock-out, but Heeney displayed effective defence. Tho New Zealander rallied in the later rounds, and managed to gain sufficient points to warrant the verdict of a draw. [When the pair • previously met Heeney lost on a doubtful decision.] O’CONNOR v. LECKIE. Monday night’s contest at His Majesty’s Theatre between the Australian leather-weight, Darby O’Connor, and New Zealand’s feather champion, Johnny Leckie, is certain of attracting a full house. Leckie has been giving a pleasing display in his daily work-outs, and is much thought of by bis admirers. On the other hand, O’Connor has come to the fore by his sparring exhibitions which he is giving daily. Last evening some 4(ill_ boxing enthusiasts assembled to see O’Connor go ten rounds against four different local boxers. One can safely say that this contest will be the best yet staged by the Otago Boxing Association. Mr J. Kilmartin will officiate as referee. There will also he three amateur preliminaries. The big contest should commence about 9 o’clock. Arrangements for the box plan are advertised.
