RAILWAY LOCOMOTIVES.
QUESTION OF CONSTRUCTION. THE NEW MINISTER'S VIEWS. [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 19. A Trades and Labor Council deputation waited on the Hon. W. H, Herries, Minister of Railways, to-day to make representation on the subject of the construction of locomotives. Mr M. J. Reardon said the council felt it was dangerously impoliiic for any Minister to give £40,000 or £50,000 worth of work to any firm such as Price Bros., of the Thames, without calling for tenders. The deputation held that the State should do the work. The Minister, in reply, said he would continue the policy of having all locomotives made in the Dominion. He was informed that the railway workshops had as much work as they could possibly do t) fulfil the present orders. He could not disturb contracts let by his predecessors. The general question was one of enormous importance, and before giving a definite answer lie would have to look into it very fully. He would be glad to adopt a forward policy, and intended to do so, but he was limited by the question of finance.
