EDUCATION RETURNS.

Tim quarterly returns of attendance for tho period ended Juno 30, which have been compiled by the Ofcago Education Board, show that there were in operation in the district 243 schools, employing 21G male and 396 female teachers, besides IS teachers of needlework. The number of pupils on the rolls at the beginning of tho quarter was 20,377, and at the end of the quarter 20.583, comprising 10,769 hoys and 9,814 girls. The average attendance was 9,807 bovs and 8,840 girls, making a. total of 18,647; being 345 less than for the previous quarter, and 213 more than for the June quarter, 1911. Tho averages for tho city and suburban schools were: Albany Street G22, Forburv 616, Caversham 598, Northeast Valley 553, Georgo Street 549, High Street 505, Kaikorai 497, Musselburgh 497, Normal 488, Macandrew Road 485, Mornington 457. Arthur Street 440, Green Island 356, Moray Place 284, Kensington 277, Maori Hill 266. Ravensbourne 162, St. Clair 162, Wakari 156, Anderson Bay 149, Leith Valley 42. The averages for Oamaru were: North 377, South 315, Middle 188. The averages at the district high schools wore: Port Chalmers 412, Balckitha 351, Mosgiel 323. Tokomaiiiro 291, Palmerston 269, Alexandra 199, Lawrence 188, Naseby 117. During the quarter schools were opened at Kahikatea and Pounawea, and tho school at Stoneburri was closed.
