A redaction of 423 in the number of co-operative laborers engaged on road and railway work has occurred eince the end of March. The railway workeis engaged during May on South Island lines were as follows:—South Island Main Trunk north end 184. south end 102 ; Midland. Nelson end. 165: Westport-Inangahua. 68; Reef-tor-Inancrahua, 77 : Greymouth-Point Elizabeth. "97 Broken River-Bcal?y, 115; Law-rence-Roxburgh, 86; Catlina-Waimahaka—-east end 263, west end 3; total, 1,136. North Island railway undertakings employed 2.197 co operative workers during the fame oeriod.
