EDUCATIONAL RETURNS.
The returns for the quarter ended September 30, which have just been compiled by the Otago Education Board, show that there were 175 schools in operation during the quarter, employing 237 male and 238 female teachers, besides 12 teachers of sewing. The number of children on the school rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 21,136, and at the end of the quarter 21,593, consisting of 11,237 males and 10,350 females. The average attendance was 9,402 boys and 8,481 girls, making a total of 17,883, being an increase of 836 over the corresponding quarter of last year. Tho attendances at the Duncdin and suburban schools were—George street, 742; Normal, 693, Arthur street, 654; Albany street, 651; Union street, 622; Caversham, 603; William street, 553; Macandrew road, 526; Mornington, 488; Kaikorai, 412; Forbury, 366 ; Kensington, 314; and North-east Valley, 322. At Port Chalmers the attendance was 538, and in the three Oamaru schools, 373, 354, and 346 respectively. New schools were opened during the quarter at Tarras and North Otago Heads.
