[Pee Press Association.] AUCKLAND, October 7. Mr R. H. Stevenson, manager of the Union Insurance Company, died to-day of consumption. The South British Insurance. Company received cable advice that the losses by the storm in Bengal Bay amount to LI 6,000, NEW PLYMOUTH, October 7. Mr Langdon, a Christchurch bicyclist, who is making a tour of the North Island, arrived here at noon yesterday. He left Wellington a fortnight ago for Napier, and, with the exception of the mountainous piece of road between the Upper Hutt and Featherston, did the whole distance on his bicycle. The eyclometer registered the distance at 224 miles, which he did in four days and a-half. He left Napier and came on by easy stages to Manawatu Gorge 5 it was blowing hard there. The distance between New Plymouth and Napier was registered as 327 miles, making a total mileage travelled since leaving Wellington 551 miles. Mr Langdon leaves to-morrow on his return journey by way of the mountain road. WELLINGTON, October 7. A fire broke out early this morning in the Gear Meat Company's boiling-down works at Petone, which were destroyed, with a large quantity of fallow. The slaughteryards and freezing works were saved. The fire broke out at 3 a.m. The boiling-down shed, the engine shed, the bone shed, and a part of the piggery were completely destroyed. The fire is supposed to be the work of an incendiary. The total insurance on the property is L 6.070. The following are the insurances on the building, plant, etc., destroyed : —Victoria, L 338 ; South British, LBOO ; Colonial, L 1.200 (about LBOO re-insured); National, L 975. CHRISTCHURCH, October 7. On Sunday last Andrew Lambert, an old man residing at Kowai Bush, was lost between that place and Springfield. When last seen he was under the influence of liquor. A soarch party went out, and this morning found his body at the foot of a; high terrace, over which it is supposed that j he had fallen.
