RE BRANDY MARKET.
fo thn ISditor. Sir, — I perceive a local in the ‘ Guardian ’ with reference to this market, and it is generally admitted (though I am prepared to prove it is not) this year’s vintage is a failure. Sir, this is the old, old story, and I write this to persuade the buyers not to he galled by these statements, but to “buy irom hand to mouth,” as the cognac magnates, Hcnnessy and Martell, always will rig the market when they get a chance, and as they are now very full of stock this is a good dodge. With reference to the opening price of the 1875 vintage, it was well known (and I challenge anybody to contradict it) it should have been 85 francs, instead of 115 francs, as 85 francs per hecto. pays the grower, and this was the quotation of similar abundant vintages, 1851, 1867, &e, We will not allow the “ Cognac Houses ” to play the old game, because we may be able to introduce a newer article—better, and not so injurious to health as their compounds are made up of—for these splendid countries can grow aU that is wanted (with treatment) in the liquor line, whether good or bad.—l am. &c., J.H.R, Dunedin, December 28.
