CITY POLICE COURT.
Wednesday, December- 27. (Before T. Birch, Esq., and Dr Niven, J.P.'s.) Disorderly Conduct.—James Howard was fined 5a for being drunk on the Caledonian Grounds, and 12s 6d, with 4s costs, with the alternative of three days' imprisonment, for knocking in the hat of the arresting constable. Maintenance.—Louis Bouisson, charged on remand with neglecting to comply with a maintenance order, was discharged, the amoun* in arrears having been paid. Obscene Language.—William Smith, described as a brothel-keeper, for using obscene language was fined 40s, in default seven days' imprisonment. Stealing a Watch.—Charles O'Neil was charged with being drunk and disorderly and with stealing a watch, the property of Duncan M'lntyre. From the evidence offered on the part of the prosecution it appeared that the watch had been stolen from prosecutor's vest, which had been left under a bush while M'lntyre was at work, and it was afterwards pawned by the prisoner, who got drunk with the proceeds. For drunkenness he Mas fined ss, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment; and .for the theft he was sent to gaol for two months. The Bench ordered that the 14s found in prisoner's possession should he handed over to the prosecutor to enable him to redeem his watoh.
Alleged Cruelty.—George Wilson was charged with having, at Kaikorai Valley, ill-treated three oxen by keeping them without food for seventy hours. Mr Bathgate, for defendant, pleaded guilty, but under such circumstances, he submitted, that their Worships would be satisfied that the statute did not contemplate such contraventions. Defendant placed certain animals in the sale-yards on last Wednesday we<jk for sale, and after the sale was completed Mr Maclean, the auctioneer, told him that all but four were sold. Defendant accordingly removed four oxen which he knew were unsold, but it turned out on the Saturday that seven had been unsold.— The case was dismissed.
