CITY COUNCIL.
V The usual meeting, of the City Council was held, yesterday afternoon ; present —the Mayor (in the chair), 'Crs.i'Wright, Gibson, Grant, Woodland, Campbell. Thomson, Roberts, Mollison, Isaac, and Brown. An application was rece ved from the Donedin Sailors’ Home Committee for an 'extension of time; but the Council determined to adhere to its former decision. The following communication from Messrs Sievwright and Stout was referred to the Works Committee :—“We are instructed by Mr Edward Pritchard to draw your attention to the damage done to his buildings in Rattray street through the fall of a portion of Canongate street and the adjoining property. One building is left in such a condition that it is dangerous to allow it to remain as it is. . Mr Pritchard intends to claim full compensation from the Corporation for the damage done, as, it has occurred wholly through the negligence of the Corporation. He gives you this immediate warning so tha,t your officers may examine the building and the dip if yoq should desire to instruct them so to.ido.”
On the Town Hall Committee’s report, andthe Hon., Geo. M‘Lean’s, letter being read,' Cr.> Isaac opposed the adoption of the report, bolding that if the Town Hall was erected in the face of the HonpGeo. M ‘Lean’s 6pinibn, each l bf the Councillors would becohiW'persOnally responsible: for taking part of the land. He moved—“ That no action be taken, in the building of the Town Hall until such time as a bill shall have passed through , the Assembly giving the Council legal power ’to do. so,” Cr. Campbell seconded the amendment. He bad always beenopposed to the building of the Town Hall on the Octagon seeing thatthetitle | was bad. Certain merri I ers of the Assembly had 1 told him that if .a stbne was placed there they would' put in* an injunction, as the | ground had been set aside for a market, and they intended retaining it for that purpose. Cr. Grant pointed out that the market reserve would be embodied in the new buildings; On ia vote, being taken only Crs, Isaac, Campbell, and Roberts voted for the amendment. The committee’s report was consequently' adopted. Cr.- Isaac, fearing legal consequences',! thereupon handed into Ms. Worship his, protest against the same. : ‘Several corhmitteq; reports were read. The Gas Committee intimated-' : that the Cargill monument would ’’-h® lighted up shortly, and that the Engineer had been instructed to -prepare' ’a statement showing the cpst. during the ’past year of producing gu. Committee recommended a paymentof.
