OTAGO AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION.
Thirty-two gentlemen met at Wain’s Hotel last evening to consider the advisability of forming an agricultural association for Dunedin, Mr E. Menlove being voted to the chair. In speaking to the principal motion, that a society be formed, to be called the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr Brydonb (of Southland) said there was reason in congratulation upon the great success of the Christmas Fat Stock Exhibition, seeing that the very finest cattle that could be produced in the South Island were represented there. .With a larger population in Dunedin than Christchurch has, we should not be behind her in go-aheadedness and liberality in our stock, or indeed in anything else. We pride ourselves upon possessing equally good stock and as good sou as those of Canterbury, and we should not be behind her in a show. He would like to see thin society the premier society in New Zealand. The various agricultural societies would give this association every assistance in their power. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr JoHtf M'Lean, in moving—"That the Otago Fat Stock Exhibition Society be merged into the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association,’" suggested that a Carnival week should be held in Dunedin next year the same as in Christchurch, with the show and races together. Mr W. J. M. Larnach, M.H.R., was unanimously elected President, and Messrs Menlove and Kitchen Vice Presidents. Thefollowing resolutionswere also carried: —''That a committee be appointed, consisting of a member of Committee from each of the Agricultural Societies of Oamarn, Clntha, Taieri, Blueskin, Waikouaiti, Tokomairiro, Tapanui, Invercargill, and all the kindred Societies, along with the following gentlemen:—Messrs H. Driver, J. Stephenson, A. and J. M'Lean, J. Brydone, J. Roberts, Kitchen, Sise, W. C. Smith, and the mover, with power to add to their number.” " That the thanks of this meeting be given to Mr Sydney James for his energetic services in connection with the Fat Stock Exhibition, and that he be recommended to the Committee as a suitable person for tbe office of secretary to the new association.” "That the annual subscription of members be one guinea.” "That the members who subscribe more than one guinea be regarded as having paid their subscription for the first year.” Mr Sydney James announced that 221 guineas had been subscribed in the room.
